Huawei concentrates on high-end in SA
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei says it saw 87% growth in its premium smartphone series in South Africa.
Its premium smartphones include the Mate phablet series and the flagship P series.
Newly appointed Huawei SA GM Zhao Likun says the company aims to be in the top two smartphone brands sold in the country within the next two years.
This announcement comes ahead of the launch of the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus in SA next month.
The launch of the P10 and P10 Plus is the first time the company is opening pre-orders at local operators in the country and says it will bundle the pre-orders with exclusive gifts.
Huawei unveiled the 5.1-inch P10 and larger 5.5-inch P10 Plus at the annual Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona in February.
They feature dual Leica co-engineered rear camera lenses, a 40% boost in battery life and software automation improvements. The company says the smartphones learn users' habits and automatically put the most frequently used apps within easy reach.
The recommended retail price for the P10 is R12 999, and R13 999 for the P10 Plus.
Rival LG released its G6 last week and will sell for R12 999.
Samsung released the Galaxy S8 and S8+ last month, selling for R15 499 and R17 499. These were the first devices released by the South Korean company since the fiery Note 7.
