E-mail Connection claims it is the first company in SA to offer an e-billing system for the visually impaired.

In association with the National Council for the Blind, E-mail Connection has incorporated screen-reading capabilities into all the electronic documents and bills its sends out on behalf of its clients.

"The functionality has been built into the electronic document and billing formats, so there is no longer any need to differentiate between visually impaired users and anyone else," says Darryl Richard, director of E-mail Connection.

Richard says all bill recipients using screen-reading software will be able to make use of the technology to have their electronic documents read to them clearly and accurately.

He explains that documents have been optimised for use with screen-reading software by making the documents logical to navigate as well as including embedded code to give users control over document options.

"Organisations have to consider clients with disabilities and our e-billing solutions now take this into account without affecting the size or appearance of the document," says Richard.

"Organisations that rely on printed documents would need to go to costly lengths to translate their documents into Braille, but according to the National Council for the Blind, thousands of blind South African have access to e-mail, while relatively few are able to read Braille," he concludes.
