Accenture has appointed Dr Caroline Belrose as chief data scientist and MD for Analytics Accenture, part of Accenture Digital.

Accenture Analytics describes itself as a global team of data natives transforming digital business across industries.

Belrose is a data analytics expert with a background in information security. She graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in mathematics and computer science, and moved to the UK to complete a Masters in information security at the University of London. Following this, she received her PhD in applied mathematics and cryptography.

Belrose joins Accenture from BankservAfrica, where over the past four years she led information services which encompassed data warehousing, analytics, business intelligence, fraud mitigation, FICA data validation and blockchain research.

BankservAfrica is the domestic South African inter-bank payment processor, switching, clearing and settling South African inter-bank payments for all retail payment streams under the governance of the SA Reserve Bank.

"I was responsible for the innovation, development and promotion of BankservAfrica's analytics capability to provide added value to bank clients, to further monetise transactional processing data and to grow internal usage of data analytics for intelligent decision-making," she explains.

Belrose adds she was also responsible for defining and implementing BankservAfrica's fraud strategy to assist South African banks with card and payment fraud detection and mitigation.

Prior to this, she held senior positions at Vodafone UK as head of analytical fraud detection and Vodafone Group in security research and development.

William Mzimba, chief executive for Accenture South Africa and chairman of Accenture sub-Saharan Africa, says of her appointment: "Belrose is a highly experienced leader and we are excited to have her on board.

"Leading businesses today can no longer just rely on their large size, past experiences, or speed to innovation and market as factors for success. They must develop the ability to continually anticipate and swiftly respond to evolving consumer wants and needs. This can be achieved by infusing insights into their decision-making process. Belrose and the analytics team will help organisations to achieve exactly that."

Commenting on this new role, Accenture Digital MD Wayne Hull says: "Dr Belrose will play a key role in taking clients through our issue-led approach to analytics which focuses on delivering business outcomes and returns from analytics and big data investments. She'll also be instrumental in working with brands to transform their customer experiences using our connected offerings in design, marketing, content and commerce so that we create new ways to win in today's experience-led economy."

Belrose takes over from Suren Govender, who headed the subsidiary for the past three years.
