The problem with modern business IT systems is that they let too many things run too openly and with too many default connections. In essence, they trust too much.
The danger of this grows exponentially in a time where businesses are being bombarded with threats from both outside and inside their walls, and find themselves battling to figure out who can and can’t be trusted.
Step in zero trust – a concept founded on the belief that businesses should not automatically trust anything or anyone, irrespective of whether they are inside or outside their perimeters, and should rather verify everything and everyone trying to connect to their systems before granting access.
The zero trust model of cyber security completely scraps the old ‘sentinel at the gates’ mentality that had companies focusing on perimeter defences only, while assuming that everything already within that perimeter posed no threat and was therefore cleared for access.
After all, some of the most notorious and damaging data breaches happened because attackers, once they had a foothold inside the corporate firewall, were able move laterally through internal systems with little to no resistance.
So how can zero trust be applied to today’s businesses?
