Computer literacy organisation, GirlCode has introduced the GirlCode Hackathon Workshop Series for 2017.

According to the women's organisation, the workshop series is designed to offer university students the opportunity to improve their ICT skills before competing in the GirlCodeHack, a hackathon taking place over three days from 4-6 August, in celebration of Women's month.

The first workshop, hosted by Entelect, will take place in February and will focus on software development fundamentals. The next workshop series will focus on design thinking (March), Web development (April), mobile app development (May), business mode (June), and elevator pitching (July).

"The idea to introduce workshops was conceived following feedback from participants in previous years. We know that women and girls enter the GirlCode Hackathon for fun, but we also know they do so to improve their skills. So we wanted to offer them more opportunities to do so earlier in the process," says Zandile Keebine, chairwoman of GirlCode.

The Workshop Series will take place every month, starting next month, where various corporate sponsors in and around Johannesburg will be running half day workshops on a variety of topics. The topics are carefully designed to give participants the best chance to compete and win at the Hackathon 2017 competition.

"The Hackathon empowers the participants with the real-world skills they need. This year, we want to offer our participants more than a once-off event. We hope that it can also be the chance to build a network of like-minded people through these workshops and hopefully find some mentors along the way too," explains Keebine.

GirlCode says the Hackathon Workshop Series is open to female students who would like to improve their IT skills. The workshops have limited numbers; therefore, space is given on a first-come-first-served basis. To secure their seat, participants can register for each workshop or get more information on www.girlcodeza.co.za.
