McAfee, a division of Network Associates, has announced the arrival of the new McAfee WebShield e1000 appliance and an upgraded software version for the WebShield e250 and e500 appliances.

The new WebShield e1000, developed for large enterprise organisations, offers the highest performance to date, scanning nearly 100% more data per hour than competing gateway appliances. The McAfee WebShield appliances are highly scalable, integrated solutions that combine award-winning anti-virus and content management software with performance-tuned hardware, providing proactive "first line of defense" gateways to quickly resolve major virus and security concerns.

"The Internet gateway acts as the unintended transportation link for a slew of security problems for the enterprise, such as viruses, inappropriate or dangerous content, spam, and Web traffic that makes legal counsel cringe," says Eric Hemmendinger, research director for security and privacy at Aberdeen Group.

"McAfee`s WebShield Appliances combine protective measures for all of these problems in a single, scalable solution, providing a comprehensive way for IT buyers to protect the enterprise without the excessive complexity and cost of disparate solutions on multiple platforms."

The new WebShield e1000 can scan 160 000 SMTP messages per hour or 2MB of HTTP traffic per second, virtually twice the speed of competitive solutions currently available on the market. In addition, WebShield e1000 also supports copper gigabit network infrastructures, which is particularly popular in larger enterprises.

All three versions of the WebShield appliances scan SMTP e-mail traffic, HTTP Web traffic, FTP file transfers and POP3 mail traffic, for hostile code and malicious content. The upgraded software for the McAfee WebShield appliances, including the e250 and the e500, allows for easier HTTP protection by delivering informative download status screens, transparent bridging and routing for high availability configuration, and in-built load sharing for greater overall performance.

"Through point-of-entry defence at the Internet gateway, the McAfee WebShield appliances provide customers with proactive protection from viruses, blended threats and other malicious traffic," says Christopher Bray, Network Associates regional director of sub-Saharan Africa.

"Complemented by traditional anti-virus products that reside on desktops, servers, and mail applications, WebShield is proven to be highly effective in stopping blended threats before they can reach their intended destinations and do damage, helping companies reduce vulnerability and increase productivity."

WebShield appliances plug into virtually any existing network to protect users from inappropriate content and spam. The WebShield appliances are managed via a Web interface and report directly into the ePolicy Orchestrator management console to provide a full range of graphical reporting.
