HP has expanded its Converged Systems portfolio, in a move it says aims to offer clients the 'fastest, simplest path to virtualisation'.

Introduced at HP Discover, in Barcelona, on Monday, the new portfolio includes HP ConvergedSystem for Virtualisation, which HP says provides an easy-to-implement, integrated system that increases performance and availability of virtual environments.

HP ConvergedSystem for Hosted Desktops, which HP describes as the industry's first hosted desktop system, was also introduced, as was HP ConvergedSystem for Vertica, which helps businesses to lower costs and turn data into business insight by adding on to existing enterprise data warehouse environments to scale analytics at high speed.

Speaking at a press conference at HP Discover, Bill Veghte, EVP and GM of HP Enterprise Group, said a new style of IT is emerging, in which IT companies need to deliver next-generation applications and Web services to drive business growth and competitive differentiation.

He said, to date, however, they have been limited by the complexity of existing IT models. "IT must transform from infrastructure craftsmen who dedicate resources to component selection, systems design, solution integration and support, to business service experts focused on delivering services that create new business opportunities."

According to Veghte, the additions to HP's Converged Systems portfolio deliver business value out of the box with workload-optimised integrated systems.

Tom Joyce, SVP and GM of HP Converged Systems, added that as businesses begin to adopt this new style of IT, the IDC predicts that the market for converged systems is expected to grow more than three times faster than the spend on traditional infrastructure.

He said the additions to HP's portfolio deliver the industry's first integrated IT systems engineered from the ground up for convergence, helping clients address issues of IT complexity and, at the same time, lowering costs and increasing performance.

Joyce explained that the products unify the servers, storage, networking, software and services that clients employ to power their IT infrastructure, in systems that are simple to manage and support.

A further benefit, says Joyce, is that the offerings are operational in as little as 20 days from date of order. He adds that the IDC reported that converged systems can cut time-to-market for new services in half, reduce downtime by 50% to75%, and lower infrastructure costs by as much as 50%.
