The new flagship Cat smartphone is the first mobile phone to feature a thermal camera and is now available in SA.
The Cat S60 was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year.
The smartphone sports a rugged design and is said to exceed military specifications. It is waterproof to depths of up to 5m for an hour. The S60's display can be viewed in bright sunlight, and the touch-screen can be controlled with wet fingers or while wearing gloves.
It is aimed at professionals who work in the building industry, utility workers and emergency first responders.
The Lepton Thermal Microcamera Module was developed by FLIR, a company that has been working in thermal imagery for over 20 years.
Practical applications of the camera include detecting heat loss around windows and doors, spotting moisture leaks and missing insulation, identifying over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry, and seeing in complete darkness.
Peter Stephens, CEO of Bullitt Group, global mobile device licensee for Caterpillar, says a myriad of specialists have found use for the integrated thermal camera, "from plumbers to horse trainers, architects to site managers, firemen to park rangers".
The company claims the 4.7-inch 4G LTE-enabled device is drop-to-concrete resistant from 1.8m, as well as salt, dust, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal shock resistant.
The Cat S60 will be available at a recommended retail price of R12 999.
