Oracle SA faces upheaval, uncertainty

Johannesburg, 19 Apr 2001

Ian Smith, Oracle`s senior VP heading up the UK, Ireland and South African divisions, says he will take on "a more active and direct role in SA".

Lenore Kerrigan, who took up the reins of the local subsidiary in July last year, is officially "on leave", and as such has been non-operational since the beginning of the week.

Oracle`s PR firm, Howard Mellet Communications, denied rumours that MD and board member Kerrigan had left the company, and issued a press release stating: "Oracle is placing increasing emphasis on the African marketplace". Smith`s active involvement is purportedly towards that end.

Kerrigan`s future responsibilities at Oracle remain unclear, and the company was unavailable for further comment at the time of publication. It is believed that Oracle will discuss this issue throughout the course of the day, and that Kerrigan presently still holds the MD title.

Smith says: "Oracle`s South African subsidiary represents our only presence on the African continent and as such it is important that we bolster our infrastructure here as we set out to penetrate the continent from this hub.

"We are therefore taking steps to more closely align Oracle SA operations with global strategies to enhance our levels and our ability to meet the needs and requirements of our customers.

"In this regard, Oracle is looking to cement stronger relationships with its growing partner base and build on the overwhelming success it has already achieved with its channel-based business in SA."
