The achievements of local and international companies were recognised at the first Frost & Sullivan African Excellence Awards, held in Sandton last night.

The awards recognise companies in the energy, healthcare, and ICT industries that have made significant strides in innovation and leadership.

Phil Howarth, director of Frost & Sullivan's African operations, says: “The products and services that we recognised should be applauded as examples of how to manage business in the current economic climate.”

Winners in the ICT sector include Mobilitrix, which won the South African mobile content product innovation award.

Speaking after accepting the award, Mobilitrix CTO Andrew Carboza said it confirmed the company was on the right track. “This award confirms that innovations for the future are on track. We have worked hard to get a culture of innovation in the company. This is only the foundation for what's to come.”

Some of the company's winning solutions include an SME offering, 'cost per action' - similar to the Google model - where users only pay when they request mobile content. Another solution is the mobile voucher request, where customers can request vouchers via SMS and then redeem it through the service.

Other winners in the ICT field include Intel, which received the 2008 Nigerian telemedicine entrepreneurial company award, and Accenture, which was awarded the Sub-Saharan Africa software outsourcing market leadership prize.
