Dell has unveiled the Dell Wyse WSM 7, which it describes as a secure and easy-to-manage desktop virtualisation software solution. It says the offering can deliver almost any Windows application to run on a physical or virtual desktop just as it would on a traditional PC, without the risks or management complexities.

Introduced at the Dell Solutions Summit 2014 in Brussels, the solution enables on-demand virtualised operating systems and applications to traditional desktops, Wyse cloud desktops and server platforms.

The company says it gives clients the option of re-using existing PCs, deploying Wyse cloud clients, or adopting a hybrid approach. Moreover, WSM-provisioned desktops use less power and are easy to replace if lost, damaged or stolen, because and applications are not stored locally. "This cuts costs, improves security and lowers impact on the environment," says Dell.

Dell unveiled cloud services in South Africa earlier this year, and says its cloud client-computing has focused on two main areas - improving its users' desktop virtualisation experiences and extending the benefits of high-performance virtual desktops to more organisations by addressing more environments and use cases.

To this end, the company recently introduced its first all-in-one thin client, the Wyse 5000 series, which combines the efficient design of an all-in-one device with the performance, manageability and security of a full-featured thin client.

Another recent release, the dual-core Wyse Intel-based 3000 series thin client, brings enterprise-grade performance at an entry-level price point.

Today's release, further simplifies management and boosts performance for virtual desktops, says Dell. New features include application-layering capabilities that allow administrators to separately provision individual applications or groups of applications by policy or department to any physical or virtual desktop, meaning IT teams can look forward to more control with fewer management headaches.

Another new feature - client caching - significantly boosts the performance of virtual desktops and applications delivered over WSM by lowering server storage and network bandwidth requirements, Dell concludes.
