Telkom changes cellular pricing

[Phillip de Wet] Telkom has changed the pricing structure for calls from its lines to cellular operators. The new pricing methodology will "bring parity" between cell providers and the fixed line monopoly, and will probably bring in a tidy profit without a rates hike. Per second billing will be replaced with a flat charge for the first minute and per 30 seconds thereafter.

Vodacom reduces cellular entry level

Vodacom says it has made cellphones accessible to low-income users by dropping the entry level. It has launched the R120 Incomer Vodago voucher, which provides a subscriber with a one-year airtime window for free incoming calls and free calls to voicemail and emergency services.

Teljoy Cellular Services to invest R30 million in new subscriber management system

Teljoy Cellular Services, SA`s largest independent cellular service provider, is to invest more than R30 million over five years in a new subscriber management system. Johann Pieterse, CEO and MD of Teljoy Holdings, says this move is in line with the company`s strategy to "aggressively grow its subscriber base and position itself to offer customers an international level of service". The CABS2000 system is supplied by Sema Group Telecoms and is widely used in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Third cell license delayed

The South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (SATRA) says public hearings on the third cellular license will only start in early September. This would seem to confirm recent media speculation that the license could only be granted in December. Eight companies are in the running to challenge MTN and Vodacom at their own game. International operators involved in bidding consortiums have expressed their concern at possible delays, saying that a revised timeframe will give the competition more time to strengthen its market position.

Ericsson awarded R150m MTN contract

Ericsson says it has been awarded a R150 million contract by MTN to supply the cellular network operator with the GSM Pro network. The agreement covers the supply of network servers and rugged mobile phones to MTN as well as the adding of advanced dispatch and group communications capabilities to MTN`s GSM network.

Telkom prepaid set to kick off

Telkom has awarded the tender for its prepaid service starter pack, and could be launching the long anticipated service soon. Corporate Communications executive Zeona Motshabi has confirmed that the tender has been awarded to Makhulu Mechanised Methods. Telkom estimates the value of the tender at R5 million per year, but that figure is considered low in relation to the possible market. A two-year contract will be signed at the end of this month.

Zintatu out of cell license race

Zintatu Communication Power has been disqualified from the race for the third cellular license. The South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (SATRA) has announced that the "irregular" last minute bid from Zintatu will not be considered along with the eight complete bids received on Monday.

Third cell license bid closed

The awarding of a third cellular license for SA is one step closer to reality with the close of bidding on Monday. One "irregular" and eight complete bids had been received by the noon deadline, and will be considered by the South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (SATRA). At a press conference shortly after the deadline, SATRA chairman Nape Maepa announced the names of consortiums that had submitted bids. They are the Telenor/Telia Consortium, Nextcom Cellular, Afrozone Telecoms, Five Mobile Networks, AfricaSpeaks, Spatial Cellular, Cell C and Kalhuma 084.

Vodacom subscribers can view incoming Telkom phone numbers

Vodacom cellular subscribers are now able to view the telephone numbers of Telkom subscribers calling from fixed lines. The Calling Line Identification was previously only available on calls between cellphones.
