Alcatel completes R300m Vodacom extension

Alcatel Altech Telecoms has announced the completion of a R300 million extension contract for Vodacom in the Cape. The contract was aimed at increasing coverage, capacity and network performance, and included delivery of base stations, controllers and network engineering tools.

Vodacom subscribers can now roam on 100 international GSM cellular networks in 69 countries, following successful negotiations by the network operator. According to Joan Joffe, Vodacom`s group executive, corporate affairs, this means that travelling overseas subscribers can be reached on their existing cellphone numbers and pay for their calls in rands when they return to SA.

Ericsson SA implements service chain

Ericsson SA, in conjunction with DHL Worldwide Express, is to implement a chain of 200 service points around the country by the end of the year, according to Business Report. The service points, housed within existing Ericsson retailers and dealers, will focus on servicing and repairing the company`s phones and accessories.

Siemens Mobile Networks and Psitek have developed a new version of the popular SIGI community telephone for cellular network operator Vodacom. X-PLOR secures R 6-m contract from MTN

X-PLOR, a new company formed to produce products for fixed and cellular network quality measurement, has secured a R6 million order from MTN to monitor the company`s cellular network in SA. A joint venture between BSW and Instrumach Telecoms, X-PLOR will have bases in SA, UK, US, Europe and Australia. The company`s marketing director, Grant Salmon, says significant international interest has also been shown in X-PLOR`s locally designed and developed products.

Accord enters lucrative South American market

JSE-listed Accord Technologies has become a major supplier to BellSouth Holdings, the US-based buying department for the $20 billion telecommunications company`s interests in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Nicaragua. This gives the Johannesburg-based company access to the South American cellular market and a dollar-based revenue stream.
