SMC to ease the migration to Fast Ethernet

SMC Networks, specialist in products for small and medium-sized LANs, has released a dual-speed Ethernet repeater in which each port can operate in either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps.

Lotus brings eSuite to local market

Lotus says its Java-based eSuite WorkPlace is ready to ship this month on the IBM Network Station Series 1000 network computer. The company says the eSuite offers users quick access to e-mail, Web browsing and a set of compact, business productivity applications - a word processor, spreadsheet, calendar, address book and presentation graphics. Lotus says the eSuite WorkPlace applets are built in Java and designed to load quickly on demand from a server.

Choice targets Year 2000 problems

Networking specialist and black empowerment company Choice Technologies, a DNS Group joint venture partner, said it has launched a Year 2000 initiative. Daphne Mashile-Nkosi, business development director, said Choice is planning to provide Year 2000 tools, training, impact analysis, cost-benefit analysis, project management, source remediation, testing, and mentoring. She said Chioce is assembling Year 2000 remediation teams that can address a multitude of programming languages and operating systems.

Novell`s next generation server operating system will natively support Intel`s future IA-64 architecture

Novell said it plans to provide native platform and development support for Intel`s IA-64 processor architecture in its new server operating system to be released in 1999. Novell expects to become the first networking software vendor to provide a new generation of network services driven by 64-bit computing. Novell's new operating system, now code-named "Modesto," will provide the fastest native IA-64 performance in the networking industry, Novell said.

Bay Networks recently announced full support for Private Network to Network Interface (PNNI) and voice integration for its Centillion LAN-ATM switch products.

Olicom passes NIA test

Olicom said its recently released CrossFire family of ATM switches and routers has passed ATM interoperability tests conducted by the Network Interoperability Alliance (NIA). Products tested included ATM backbone switches, Token-Ring LAN switches with wire-speed ATM uplinks, ATM edge routers, and ATM server adapters.

Novell`s BorderManager wins industry awards

Novell said that BorderManager has received two more industry awards - from Data Communications Magazine and Federal Computer Week Magazine - garnering nine trophies in just six months from around the world. BorderManager is the industry`s first integrated family of directory-based network services.

LANNET evolves out of Madge to handle Ethernet, ATM business

Madge Networks said it has launched its LANNET Ethernet division as a separate business entity to offer solutions in the Ethernet and ATM markets. Madge Networks said the move is in line with company`s decision to restructure the organisation into focused business units for the Token Ring, Video and ISDN and Ethernet markets. The Israeli-based company, acquired in 1995 by Madge Networks, LANNET has had significant market acceptance in South Africa in both the channel and the customer environments, Madge said.
