Apple's new operating system, OS X El Capitan, is available for download on Mac computers.

El Capitan was announced as the latest operating system for Mac, version 10.11, in June.

New features include improved gesture support and a more detailed spotlight search. Users will also now be able to split screens. El Capitan is faster and more responsive than OS X Yosemite, says Apple.

"El Capitan refines the Mac experience and improves performance in a lot of little ways that make a very big difference," says Craig Federighi, Apple's senior VP of software engineering.

"Feedback from our OS X beta program has been incredibly positive and we think customers are going to love their Macs even more with El Capitan."

Cult of Mac has tested the new system and pointed out Spotlight search now allows users to search in natural language, using slang and shortened words or phrases. Users are able to make their top menu bar automatically disappear like the bottom app tray, to free up more screen real estate, it adds.

Lifehacker showed El Capitan has incorporated 'swipe to delete' from iOS. This means users are able to swipe over an e-mail, using their trackpad, to delete an e-mail.

OS X El Capitan is available as a free update from the Mac App Store. It supports all Macs introduced in 2009 and later, and some models introduced in 2007 and 2008.
