Using subliminal transmissions for a good cause

JSE-listed black empowerment IT company, Casey, has signed a contract with Best Media and the SABC that will see it make use of Vertical Black Intervals (VBI) used in TV transmissions to transmit data. Casey will use this wireless datacast technology for distance education. Nigel Vaz, GM of Caseynet, Casey`s Internet division, says the company -- although entitled to use the VBI for general broadcasting of data -- has exclusive rights to use VBI in the remote educational market.

Hitachi Data Systems and Cisco Systems offer mainframe networking solutions

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) and Cisco Systems have announced a worldwide agreement designating HDS as a global systems integrator. Under the terms of the agreement, HDS will resell the Cisco 7000 Series of channel-attach, multi-protocol routers, allowing enterprises to achieve reliable, cost-effective mainframe-to-network connectivity.

HP, Cisco to deliver integrated network management solution

Simplifying the task of managing networks by using Web standards for interoperability and information exchange, Hewlett-Packard has announced the integration of its OpenView Network Node Manager 6.0 with the CiscoWorks2000 application set. Gary de Menezes, software business manager at Hewlett-Packard SA, is upbeat about the announcement, saying his company must promote joint vendor development when it makes sense. "The two products are integrated at all levels through Cisco Management Connection, providing links from the hardware to the software. The functionality is delivered through a central console environment; this makes it far easier to manage the enterprise, up to and including application layers," he explains.
