Bay provides first industrial strength, portable open routing software

Bay Networks said it has established an independent line of business, an Open Routing Division that will license and sell a portable version of Bay Routing Services (BayRS) technology. Bay said the BayRS ensures full interoperability in the largest, most complex multi-vendor network environments. Completion of the open routing strategy also includes the acquisition of Phase2 Networks, a leading provider of open Layer 3 routing and switching software, the company said.

3Com reports accelerated demand for Gigabit Ethernet

3Com said there is a huge demand for its Gigabit Ethernet products, with 10,000 port shipments for the second quarter of `98. Figures are based on shipments of 3Com`s SuperStack II and CoreBuilder switches. All 3Com Gigabit Ethernet products are compliant with the final IEEE 802.3z (Gigabit Ethernet) standard announced last week by the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance, the company said. According to industry estimates, the Gigabit Ethernet market will reach $261 million this year, and, with the ratification of the standard, grow almost six-fold in just two years to reach $1.5 billion by the end of 2000.

Successful European trial shows tag-switching offers a solution for Internet scalability

The TEN-34 Task Force Group, a consortium of European research bodies, has just completed a successful independent test of Tag Switching, pioneered by Cisco Systems. Tag Switching allows Internet Protocol (IP) interconnection across WAN ATM devices. The Tag Switching trial scaled IP interconnection between European National Research Networks in Austria (ACONET), France (RENATER), Germany (DFN), Italy (GARR), Spain (REDIRIS) and Switzerland (SWITCH).
