Compaq buyout of digital equipment: the channel reacts

Compaq`s potential in the marketplace will only be realised if it separates its traditional "box moving" activities from its enterprise focus, gained with the purchase of Digital, a local Digital reseller said. Peter Cheverton, MD of DNS Entity, South Africa`s only Digital Premier Value Added Reseller (VAR), said while the channel welcomes the Digital acquisition by Compaq, it is sensitive to a merger of their distribution lines.

Dimension Data Networking, a local networking integrator, said it had partnered with Check Point Software Technologies, a leading global provider of enterprise security and traffic management solutions. Check Point sells its security products such as FireWall-1 solely through a sales channel consisting of VARs, systems integrators, OEMs and ISPs. Dimension Data Networking has become a Certified Check Point support centre and a Certified Check Point Premier Partner.

CCH moves R12m in HP equipment

Computer Configurations says it is stepping up its penetration of the Hewlett-Packard computer market, and reports R12 million in sales in the past six months. The company, known by its midrange solutions and services, has broken into the Hewlett-Packard market since becoming a certified HP Connect value-added reseller in January. Having initially had major successes with HP equipment in education markets, Computer Configurations says it is also focusing on other markets such as parastatals and the HP/SAP R/3 markets.

3Com tops retail charts

Latest retail statistics released by The Connection Group show that 3Com`s US Robotics 56k modem, its Office Connect Networking Kit and the Palm III Personal Diary Assistant (PDA) are the top selling products in their respective categories. The statistics are based on data accumulated from all three retail chain stores that the Connection Group now owns, including Software Connection, Incredible Connection and its recently acquired Computer Superstore.

Cash injection to open Cape Town office

The national distributor of Philips LCD projectors, Solution Technologies, has set up shop in Cape Town to meet a growing need for service and support in the region. Nalini Singh-Hofer, LCD product manager of Philips, says the company`s move is indicative of an increased demand for LCD projector-based presentations by corporates in the Cape. "The region accounts for around 20 percent of Philips SA`s business. With more direct representation we expect to double this figure."

Xerox Channels Group: Great business is not just about selling product

Xerox Channels Group has appointed Siltek Distribution Dynamics as the sole distributor of its products in South Africa - a move Xerox believes offers the best possible value to end users and resellers. XCG South Africa general manager Billy Bell said reseller margins have been eroded by multi-tier distribution and over trading. "We do not believe that multiple distributors give our customers or the resellers of our products value for money," Bell said.
