Madge leaps into IP net services

[Ranka Jovanovic] Madge Networks used to be synonymous with token ring and then with video conferencing. But this product-centric image is about to change as the number two token ring vendor prepares its foray into IP-focused managed network services market with the Madge Networks Services (MNS) division. According to Peter Turvey, GM of Madge Networks South Africa, the company is preparing to kick off the service in SA early next year. Vendor-independent, MNS will focus on the fast-growing IP services market, offering data centre, Web hosting and network outsourcing services.

[Staff reporter] MIH Holdings and M-Web are set to go their separate ways on the JSE as MIH Holdings de-links its shares from M-Web. The de-linking will be effective from close of business on Friday, 30 July, with M-Web listing under the industrial development stage sector of the JSE on Monday, 2 August. However, MIH Holdings has made a commitment to an equity investment of up to 10% in M-Web through its subsidiary MIH Limited.

Cisco, MS extend development agreement for directory-enabled networks

Cisco Systems and Microsoft have extended their joint development agreement for the Microsoft Active Directory service in Windows 2000 Server. In its collaboration with Microsoft, Cisco is developing Cisco Networking Services for Active Directory, a family of networking services built on the Microsoft Active Directory platform.

Correctional services dept in R 12-million network upgrade

Black empowerment company, Choice Technologies, has won a government tender to upgrade the network equipment and wiring infrastructures at more than 240 prisons and community offices within various Provincial Commissioners offices throughout SA. The R12 million contract, which is valid for a two-year period, will support moves towards a "high-availability" network for the Department of Correctional Services` many mission-critical software applications. The contract also supports the conversion of non-Y2K compliant installations and the full integration of the department`s nationwide IT infrastructure, says MP Mallane, IT director of Correctional Services.
