3Com Corporation has announced it acquired Lanworks Technologies, a leading provider of PC network boot technologies and products, which are critical components of a complete desktop management environment. The purchase is valued at $13-Million.

3Com CEO predicts cost savings of converged networks

"Thirty percent of corporations will be taking advantage of converged data, video and voice networks by the millennium," Eric Benhamou, 3Com chairman and CEO, said in his keynote address at the Enterprise conference in San Francisco. Benhamou said the convergence of networks will generate up to $10 billion in annual savings that can be reinvested in customer service, new business opportunities and new technologies.

Bay is committed to delivering IP optimised networks

Bay Network said it has launched the Access Cornerstone initiative. The initiative is part of Bay Networks Adaptive Networking and aims to provide end-to-end value-added services that run over multi-vendor infrastructures. Bay said its optimised IP services include broad Virtual Private Networks (VPN) solution set and Voice-over-IP applications.

International network management forum accepts first SA member

Telecommunications systems integration house, BSW-Telecoms, said it has become the first South African associate member of the international networking standards authority, the Network Management Forum (NMF). The NMF is a non-profit consortium of 210 world`s leading service providers, equipment suppliers and systems integrators. BSW-Telecoms said NMF`s mission is to develop practical solutions for improving the management of telecommunications networks and services.

SMC puts switching on the desktop

SMC Networks has announced its EZ Switch Desktop (DT). SMC says the new product can be seen as a true hub-replacement switch.
